START SMALL

If you lack either confidence or experience in arranging flowers, collect small bottles and vases and play with grouping a variety of flowers and foliage of different colors and textures. If you have limited amounts of plant material, choose containers with narrow or somewhat nipped-in necks so that even these few stems are supported and remain upright. With wide-necked containers, use a lot of flowers so they can support each other, or first pack some floral foam (Oasis) into the container. The stems can then be inserted into the wet foam so that they can be positioned more precisely. Experimentation is the best way for a novice to learn how to make pleasing arrangements. Cut the stems to different lengths and remember that usually an arrangement should be no taller than about one and a half times the height of the vase. If it is higher than this it will look top-heavy. Don’t jam too many flowers into a container so that they obscure each other, but give them some breathing space.
